Kootenay Broom business is BEWITCHED
Crawford Bay, British Columbia, Canada (June 27, 2005) - What does Hollywood and a Kootenay Artisan have in common? Handcrafted Brooms! Nicole Kidman and Will Farrell are flying on them in the recently released movie “Bewitched”. Broommakers Rob and Janet Schwieger of North Woven Broom in Crawford Bay were in almost daily contact with Hollywood props specialist, Steven Melton, during August of 2004, and they ended up producing over 20 specially designed brooms for the movie.
Says Janet, “Last summer was certainly ‘bewitched’ for us and for our customers, as they watched while we produced the brooms. It was a lot of fun to say to people, this is Nicole Kidman’s broom!” The Bewitched posters hanging in movie theatres across the county have, as front and center, Nicole and Will riding one of Rob and Janet’s brooms. Janet and Rob also produced an additional 42 copies of the poster brooms for Sony Style stores across the USA for their promotion of the movie.
North Woven Broom has supplied props for several other movies and TV shows over the years, such as Shanghai Noon, Open Range, Road to Avonlea, and Lonesome Dove. In addition, 250 of their brooms were used to launch the fifth Harry Potter book by Raincoast Books, Canadian publisher. The broom business was featured on CBC’s On the Road Again in 2000.
The Bewitched movie, released in movie theatres on June 24, is a romantic comedy based on the old TV show of the same name. There is a slight twist in the movie however – as Nicole Kidman portrays a real witch who lands the role of Samantha in a fictional remake of the TV Bewitched. Will Farrell plays the role of Darrin.
Now when asked, “Do these brooms fly?” Rob and Janet Schwieger of North Woven Broom in Crawford Bay can say with honesty, “You bet!
